Utada Hikaru announced that she will be transferring labels from EMI Records to Sony Music Japan.
The change will occur on March 1st, with her moving to the sub-label Epic Records Japan.
The label Epic Records Japan is known for having notable artists including SCANDAL.
This move comes as a result of her return to music after a short hiatus and her desire to start fresh. Alongside the label change announcement, it was also revealed that new music would be released this year.
She has been with EMI Records since 1998, almost 20 years.
Label changes aren’t uncommon in the Japanese music scene, but having a notable artist such as Utada Hikaru decide to make the move is certainly an interesting change.
As she mentioned, moving over to a new label gives her a chance to start fresh and release music that better reflects her newly reborn self.
Hopefully we get more updates as time goes by, but for now it’s certainly some great news for those who are eagerly awaiting new music from Hikaru!
