AKB48 have announced the formation of a new sister group titled STU48.
Announced shortly after the 7th annual Janken tournament, the group will be based not on a city but on a body of water, specifically the Seto Inland Sea area. This area is well known in Japan and includes several islands that includes prefectures such as Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, Okayama, Hyogo, Ehime, Kagawa, and Tokushima.
All performances for this group will take place at sea, with the theater being located in a ship that will sail around the area.
The name of the group is based on this with STU standing for Setouchi 48.
How do you know you have a successful company? When you’re able to create an idol group that exists solely at sea.
Not much info has been released apart from that, but it seems like an interesting development in the ever expanding domination of the ’48 sister groups. In fact, we’re now up to 10 different sister groups if we include the ones overseas so it seems like we are sure to see more different groups start to appear.
Will we start seeing groups that perform only in airplanes soon (SKY48)? Time will tell, but for now I’m excited to find out more information about this new group and what kind of releases they will have!
