[UPDATED] AKB48’s Watanabe Mayu Announces Graduation

AKB48 Watanabe Mayu

Update: Her graduation concert is set for October 31 at Saitama Super Arena

AKB48 member Watanabe Mayu has announced her graduation from the group.

The announcement was done at AKB48’s 49th senbatsu where she mentioned how she has already celebrated her 10th anniversary since her debut. She concluded by saying that she wishes to go out to the world and have a fresh start.

Watanabe Mayu joined AKB48 as part of Team B in December 2009. She has since then transferred to Team A in August 2012, and finally to Team B again in February 2014.

Seeing her announce her graduation is somewhat expected since several members who have hit the 10 year mark have already left the group. However, Mayu is among the most popular members of the group so many fans were taken aback.

It’s a great opportunity for her to make a name for herself and discover more opportunities outside of AKB48. We wish Mayu the best and look forward to finding out more about her future plans!

  1. I am surprised it took Mayu so long to jump off the sinking ship. She already has a solo and acting career, her agent will make sure of it for their percentage. She should have been the stable Center after Yuko, but it appears that she didn’t want it; or she would have been. I am happy for her, she gave a lot and was always professional, maybe too professional. I wish her nothing but the best.

    1. Absolutely, Mayu did take some time to announce her graduation. But, it seems like a good way for her to dedicate herself to her acting and solo career again
