AKB48 To Form Units For Janken Tournament 2017

AKB48 have announced that this year’s Janken tournament will feature units.

Previous Janken tournaments featured individual members with the winner getting to be center of AKB48’s next single. This time the members will compete as part of units.

Everyone – except those who have announced their graduation – is eligible to be part of this tournament. This includes AKB48, SKE48, NMB48, HKT48, NGT48, and STU48 (overseas groups like JKT48 are not eligible).

A member can only register for the tournament if they’re part of a unit. But, each unit will be able to choose their own members and their name. If the unit wins the tournament they will be rewarded with a major debut.

To avoid creating groups that are too big, there are only a certain amount of units available for each amount of members. For example. there are only 2 solo groups permitted, but if members team up as 2-member units then there are 20 units available.

  • Solo: 2
  • 2-members units: 20
  • 3-members units: 15
  • 4-member units: 5
  • 5-member units: 2
  • 6-member units: 1
  • 7-member units: 1
  • 8-15 member units: 1
  • 16+ member units: 1

There are already two units announced:

  • TBA: Minegishi Minami, Sashihara Rino, Kashigawa Yuki
  • Imomu-chu!: Tani Marika, Sakaguchi Riho, Tomiyoshi Asuka, Komada Hiroka

The Janken tournament is scheduled to take place on September 24th at Nippon Gaishi Hall.

The AKB48 Janken tournament is known far and wide as one of the most waited events and it seems they’ve decided to spice it up with an interesting theme this year. Getting to see unique combinations of members is sure to be a treat, and we should get to see more units pop up in the coming weeks as the members register to be part of this year’s event.

Make sure to stay tuned since this tournament is promising to be an eventful one!

  1. I hope not only the winner unit becomes a real unit, because both units already announced are things I’d like to see IRL, and I’m sure there will be other good ones. Sure, major debut for the winner only, but please oh please management throw a bone of some sort for other units that somehow stand out.
